According the new sources at The National, Wikipedia, the online information resource giant, is exploring possibilities of opening an office in the middle-east.
Arabic is the 5th most spoken language in the world and yet, there aren’t that many articles available on Wikipedia (as compared to English). The plan is to increase the local content and involve the people of the region.
The co-founder of Wikipedia, Jimmy Wales, says Egypt and Jordan are the most likely location in which it may form a presence. This year Wikipedia will open an office in India, its first outside the US.
Wikipedia is a multilingual, web-based, free-content encyclopedia project based on an openly editable model. Wikipedia is written collaboratively by largely anonymous Internet volunteers who write without pay. Anyone with Internet access can write and make changes to Wikipedia articles (except in certain cases where editing is restricted to prevent disruption or vandalism). Users can contribute anonymously, under a pseudonym, or with their real identity, if they choose.
