Oman 1-1 Saudi Arabia

Dammam: Oman and Saudi Arabia played out a 1-1 draw in their final Group A fixture on Wednesday as the Gulf Sultanate confirmed their place in the play-offs as runners-up to Korea Republic.

Skipper Hussain Al Hadhri, who was part of Oman’s 2009 Gulf Cup winning squad, put the visitors 1-0 up with two minutes of the first-half at the Prince Mohammed bin Fahad Stadium played before Fahd Al Muwallad netted the equaliser 11 minutes after the interval as the Saudis concluded their disappointing campaign without a win having drawn three and lost three.

The result turned out to be academic for Oman as Qatar failed to get the win they needed against the Koreans in Seoul that would keep alive their slim hopes of a second place finish.

Victory for Qatar coupled with a defeat for Oman would have seen the Qataris advance to the play-offs but as it transpired the awarding of a 3-0 win to Oman after Qatar fielded an ineligible player in the meeting between the two sides in Muscat, which had originally finished in a 1-1 draw, proved telling.

Update: The three runners-up from the third round groups, Uzbekistan, Oman, Syria to play each other at a neutral venue on 25, 27 and 29 March 2012.
