It seems Oman have been improving after every match in the ongoing Group ‘A’ Under-22 Asian Cup qualifiers. Yesterday, the hosts outclassed Turkmenistan 3-1 at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex.
‘‘I thought it would be a difficult game, as our opponents had lost to formidable UAE by a solitary goal on Monday in an earlier tie. But outplaying them by a convincing margin was a vast improvement,’’ said Oman’s French coach Philippe Burle, while admiring his boys on their splendid performance.
Oman, who dominated the game from the beginning, were found wanting when it came to finishing and thus lost a number of scoring opportunities.
However, they took the lead just two minutes before half-time when striker Abdullah Saleh was bang on target.
After the interval, Turkmenistan’s Magtymov Yhlas who came in as a substitute, scored the equaliser through a long-ranger which turned out to be the best goal of the day.
However, twelve minutes later midfileder Sami Mubarak once again put Oman into the lead firing a right-footer.
Substitute Mubarak Humaid al Maqbali, who was the saviour in Oman”s last tie against Lebanon which the former won 3-2, once again came to the rescue of the Sultanate side nodding home a cross in the 82nd minute.
Turkmenistan coach Hojageldiyev Yazguly attritbuted Oman’s success to their players’ physique.
