SRK’s pre-Valentines Muscat show

Bollywood heartthrob Shah Rukh Khan charmed a Muscat audience of 15,000 with an entertaining act that had all the ingredients of a masala Hindi movie, action, romance, Sufism and comedy at the Oman Automobile Club grounds on Wednesday night.

King Khan’s show began about 45 minutes late and his fans had to wait for another 45 minutes for his dramatic action-packed entry. He arrived in a cage that was lifted over the audience, taken around and then kept near the double-level stage, cleverly fitted with LED screens that created wonderful backdrop for each act.

After his daring entry from a suspended cage, Khan charmed the audience with a medley of his hit romantic songs. He also interacted with the audience to create romance as well as triggering loud laughter.

Khan called on stage an Omani student, Amira, and performed a full act of romantic songs before jokingly offering to take the young girl with him to India. The girl responded sportingly.

Then there was a young couple from India’s eastern city of Kolkata with whom Khan created an impromptu Valentine’s Day skit. The wife, fondly called Pochu, went along with the act and confessed to being Khan’s biggest fan.

The Indian Premier League cricket team owner didn’t miss an opportunity to make a wisecrack over the ropes when the husband unwittingly said that his wife was former Indian captain Saurav Ganguly’s neighbour. Tongue firmly in cheek, Khan said, “he scored a lot of runs for my team”. Ganguly’s sacking from Kolkata Knight Riders had given Khan a lot of bad publicity.

While Khan was at his best entertaining the Muscat crowd during only his second visit here in a decade, the supporting acts left much to be desired. Pakistani singer-actor Ali Zafar failed to live up to expectations although his band was terrific. Except one fusion song with Zafar, the female lead singer lip-synced on her own songs.

Like most Bollywood films, Katrina Kaif and Preity Zinta were just for glamour quotient and hardly added value to Temptation Reloaded 2013 with their cosmetic act.

Full marks to Light and Shadow for constructing an arena with full facilities from scratch while Mumbai-based Cineyug created a top grade production.
